Śabda

Śabda: Gītā words you already use.

Śabda is the series about the Sanskrit words you already use: karma, yoga, guru, namaste, śānti. Each of its 12 stories takes one of them to the verse of the Gītā where it appears. Often the meaning there is not the one we use every day. Karma is action, not payback, and yoga is evenness of mind and skill in action, not a pose.

To use it, choose a word from the grid, watch the short film, then read the verse in Sanskrit, transliteration and English, with the word highlighted where it appears as written. The count gives facts computed from the text, such as where the verse sits in the 700 and how often the word turns up. The paragraph called Going deeper explains what is being said around it and links to the chapter and verse pages.

Every verse is free to read at getvani.app/gita, with no account needed. The list under the grid gives all of the words as plain links in number order, each with the line its film opens on.
