The lamp inside

Every Diwali, you light a diya at the door. Kṛṣṇa says he lights one inside you.

On Diwali the first diya goes at the door, to push the dark back from the house.

In chapter ten Kṛṣṇa describes a lamp of his own. At 10.11 he says that, out of compassion, seated in the heart, he dispels the darkness born of not knowing with the shining lamp of knowledge: jñāna-dīpena bhāsvatā.

The darkness he means is not outside the door. It is the one inside, the not knowing.

This Diwali, light both.

Ask the Gītā your own question.

Arjuna asked his. Samvāda answers yours with the Gītā's own verses.

Samvāda is software, an AI companion tuned to the Bhagavad Gītā. It is not a person. It answers from the verse and shows you which one, and it never pretends to be Kṛṣṇa.

The verse

Out of compassion for them alone, I, abiding in their mental activity as its object, dispel the darkness born of ignorance with the brilliant lamp of knowledge.

Going deeper

Chapter 10 speaks of devotion before it lists Kṛṣṇa's glories. 10.10 says that to those who stay joined to him and worship with love, he gives the understanding that leads them to him. 10.11 explains the gift with an image: out of compassion for them, he abides in their minds and drives out the darkness born of not knowing, with the bright lamp of knowledge. The darkness is ignorance, not night. Right after, in 10.12, Arjuna answers by calling Kṛṣṇa the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Light and the supreme purifier. The lamp image is not new in the Gītā: a lamp that does not flicker in a windless place is how 6.19 describes a steady mind. A diya at the door and the lamp in this verse point the same way, from darkness toward light. Read on at chapter 10.
